As Daniel’s car disappeared down the street, I sat at the kitchen table, clutching the note Dr. Harris had given me. My heart pounded in my chest as I unfolded the paper, revealing the seven words that changed everything: “Is Lily safe? Call me anytime. Dr. Harris.”
The quiet kitchen felt vast and empty, and I realized I was holding my breath. I needed to think clearly, but my mind was racing with questions and fears. What did Dr. Harris see that prompted him to write those words? All the things I had dismissed as growing pains and family adjustments stared back at me, demanding my attention.
I glanced at Lily’s bedroom door. The hallway seemed longer, filled with shadows of my own doubts. I needed to talk to her, but I didn’t want to scare her. Carefully, I knocked on her door.
“Lily? Can I come in?” I called softly.
There was a pause before I heard her small voice reply, “Okay.”
I opened the door to find her curled up on her bed, hugging the stuffed rabbit. Her eyes were red, a telltale sign that she’d been crying. My heart ached at the sight.
“Hey, sweetheart,” I said gently, sitting down beside her. “How are you feeling?”
She shrugged, avoiding my gaze. “Okay, I guess.”
I hesitated, unsure of how to approach the subject. “Lily, you know you can tell me anything, right? If something’s bothering you, or if you need to talk, I’m here.”
She nodded but didn’t say anything.
I took a deep breath. “Is there anything you want to tell me about today? About the dentist or… anything else?”
Lily glanced at me, her eyes wide and searching. “Mom, are we in trouble?”
Her question caught me off guard. “No, sweetheart, we’re not in trouble. But I want to make sure you’re okay. It’s important to me.”
