Victor laughing about drugging my tea so I would sleep through his departure.
Victor telling Olivia that once they landed in Zurich, “the useless wife would wake up with nothing but a robe and a frozen account.”
I listened without expression.
Inside, something old and tender finally died.
Not love.
That had been dying for months.
Hope.
The foolish little hope that maybe there had once been a version of Victor who loved me before greed turned him into someone else.
No.
The recordings made the truth plain.
He had loved what I provided.
My name.
My company.
My father’s legacy.
My silence.
When Diane finished reviewing the files, she said, “This changes the criminal case.”
Olivia nodded.
“I’ll testify.”
I looked at her.
“You understand what that means?”
“Yes.”
“You will not walk away clean.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”

“Because he called me stupid after they took us into questioning. He said if I had been smarter, we would already be in Zurich. He said I was just the pretty part of the plan.”
For the first time, I almost pitied her.

Victor was charged with wire fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy, and obstruction-related counts.
Arthur Bell was charged separately for his role in approving false financing.
