Part 4: The Final Settlement
“No!” Dorothy snapped, backing away from the deputy. “I am not leaving! This is a setup! Vera manipulated him on his deathbed! He wasn’t in his right mind!”

Melanie pulled out an iPad, tapped the screen a few times, and turned it around so everyone in the room could see.

A video began playing. It was Simon, sitting in his hospital bed. Despite his pale skin and hollow cheeks, his eyes were sharp, focused, and utterly clear.

“If you are watching this,” Simon’s recorded voice echoed through the quiet apartment, “it means I am gone, and my mother, Knox, and the rest of the family are currently standing in my living room trying to take everything Vera and I built.”

Dorothy froze, looking at her son’s face on the screen as if she had just seen a ghost.

“Mother,” Simon’s voice continued calmly on the recording, “you always said I was soft. You thought because I didn’t fight back when you demanded money or insulted my wife, that I didn’t notice. But I noticed everything. I know about the secret account Knox opened using my business name. I know about the legal fees you tried to stick to my firm last month. Every single dollar you took has been calculated.”

Simon took a breath on the video, looking directly into the camera.

“I have left you exactly what you gave me throughout my life: nothing. Everything goes to Vera. She supported me when I had zero dollars, while you only cared about me when I had millions. If you attempt to challenge this trust, Melanie has full authorization to file corporate fraud charges against Knox and press criminal charges for breaking and entering today.”

The video cut to black.

The silence in the room was absolute. Knox’s face was completely drained of color; he looked as though he might throw up right there on the rug. He slowly dropped the suitcase handle and took two steps back.

“You… you wouldn’t press charges,” Knox stammered, staring at Melanie.

“Try me,” Melanie replied without a hint of hesitation. “The deputy here is recording everything on his body camera. You have five minutes to un-pack those suitcases, leave every key on this table, and clear out.”
